Independent Study
Mission Statements
Independent Study will provide a flexible learning environment for K-12 students in the district whose needs are best met through study outside of the regular classroom setting.
The mission of Modoc Adult Community School is to provide an affordable, (no fees required) flexible way for adults to successfully complete requirements for a high school diploma in a supportive, caring environment and to help students make the connections they need to not only make a decent living but have a decent life.
Program Descriptions
Independent Study allows students to pursue day time employment while completing their studies. Students can also use the program to make up a year, get ahead, and complete early. Independent Study uses the same curriculum as the student’s school of record. Typically, students attend class for one hour a week to correct work, take tests, and get the next assignments. The program can accommodate 26 students.
The pathway to success starts at Modoc Adult Community School for adults of all ages and diversity who need to complete requirements for a high school diploma in a flexible environment. Students can earn credits through an Independent Study program, in the classroom using the educational software program OdysseyWare, or a combination of both. Independent Study students complete assignments between weekly meetings with a credentialed teacher. The classroom option is available weekdays during regular school hours. A core curriculum of English, Social Science, Science, Math/Algebra along with Art, Health and Nutrition, Consumer Education, Parenting Skills, Career exploration and a variety of elective options are included in the 200 credits needed to complete the coursework for a diploma. Adult students are also guided, through the latest instruction techniques, toward a successful outcome on the California English and Math exit exams.
