Welcome to a new school year! Transportation provided by the Modoc Joint Unified School District, whether home to school, on field trips or extracurricular activities, such as sports activities, is a privilege we extend to all students. We are committed to providing your children with the safest transportation possible. In order for us to assure you that your children will be transported safely, it is important that you are aware of and fully understand the transportation rules and behavior expectations of the District. The rules governing transportation are located in MJUSD’s Board Policy referenced below. These rules will be strictly enforced in the interest of safety for your children and all other students and others who ride District buses. As a reminder, we ask that you talk to your children about respecting the property rights of others at bus stops. Many bus stops are adjacent to or are on private property. We request that you talk to children about not littering, breaking branches on trees and shrubs, and not getting into flower beds. Horseplay by throwing rocks creates unsafe conditions and could result in a tragic injury. We appreciate your help in this matter. SCHOOL BUS EMERGENCY PROCEDURE AND PASSENGER SAFETY
All Pupils in prekindergarten, kindergarten, and grades 1 through 12, inclusive, in public or private school who are transported in a School bus. The county superintendent of schools, superintendent of the school district, or owner/operator of a private school, as applicable, shall ensure that the instruction is provided as follows:
(1) Upon registration, the parents or guardians of all pupils not previously transported in a School bus or school pupil activity bus and grades 1 through 6, inclusive, shall be provided with written information on School bus safety. The information shall include, but not be limited to, all the following:
(a) A list of School bus stops near each pupil’s home—Route sheets available on Modoc Joint Unified School District webpage
(b) General rules of conduct at School bus loading zones
(c) Red light crossing instructions—Obey driver’s instructions
(d) Walking to and from School bus stops.
(e) School bus danger zone
NOTICE TO PARENTS/GUARDIANS
REGARDING SCHOOL CLOSURE DUE TO SNOW
As a general rule, Modoc Joint Unified School District does not close schools due to snow. Schools are closed only when the safety of students requires it. The following are the procedures that are used to determine school closure and to notify parents.
1. Director of Transportation determines, with the aid of input from Cal Trans, road conditions on the bus routes. If roads are passable, school will start at the regular time and buses will run on their normal schedule. If roads are in bad shape, but are likely to be cleared on the routes, then school will start at the regular time and buses will run one hour and forty-five minutes (1 hr. 45 min.) later than usual. (Board Policy #3543.1) KCNO will be notified of these conditions between 6:45 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. KCNO will announce any changes in schedule.
2. If buses are running under the snow schedule, announcements will be made on KCNO Radio to broadcast the delays. It is possible that some routes will be delayed while others will run on schedule. Please pay close attention to the announcements on KCNO as they will specify the particular bus routes that are delayed.
3. If conditions are hazardous and unlikely to improve, announcements will be made on KCNO that school has been canceled. We will also ask the T.V. stations in Redding and Klamath Falls to announce that school has been closed. School closures are always for the minimum number of days possible. Please be prepared to send students to school the next regular school day. School closures will be announced on a day to day basis.
4. If a heavy snow storm develops during the day after school has started, the regular school day may be reduced to a minimum attendance day. Buses will begin to transport student’s home at approximately 1:30 p.m. Announcements to this effect will be made on KCNO Radio prior to closure. Should this create a problem with your student being able to safely get home, you should contact your child’s school principal prior to 1:00 p.m. and request that your child be kept at school until the end of the normal school day when you can pick him/her up or make other arrangements to have them taken home. Buses will not make a second transportation run.

DISASTER EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION
For certain disaster emergencies that could occur while school is in session (earthquakes, fires, explosions, etc.) the school sites have drawn up a series of disaster contingency plans. Some actions merely require children to assume safe positions in classrooms; others require evacuation of the classroom; while some others require children to go directly home.
In case immediate dismissal of classes and evacuation of school grounds is required, it would be of great help if you have reviewed in detail with your child specific arrangements regarding where to go in case you are not at home.
It is important to realize that under some emergency conditions, because of broken lines or overloaded switchboards, it will not be possible to notify everyone by telephone, nor should you attempt to reach the school by phone. Because of blocked or congested streets and roads, parents should not try to come to the school or pick up their children.
